If the results of your diagnostic sleep study indicate that you have obstructive sleep apnoea your sleep physician may recommend you commence CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy as it is the gold standard treatment for sleep disordered breathing.
If you are prescribed CPAP therapy you will be referred by your doctor to a reputable CPAP provider and fitted with a CPAP mask and a machine. Your CPAP provider will explain the use of the machine and you will be able to trial it at home. Your doctor will then recommend you have another sleep study called a CPAP titration.
A CPAP titration study involves coming to the sleep lab for an overnight sleep study while you use your CPAP mask and machine. The sleep scientist in the lab will be able to control the settings on your machine overnight and find an optimal pressure that will effectively treat your sleep disordered breathing. These optimal pressures can then be applied to your CPAP machine that you have hired and later purchased for continued treatment long term.
If you are already using CPAP but it has been a while since you had your pressures assessed for their effectiveness, your sleep physician may request you have an another CPAP titration study. The Australasian Sleep Association recommends that you have your treatment reassessed every 12 months to ensure you are effectively being treated. The RMS may also require you to have your treatment assessed every year in order to renew your drivers license.
